Brecksville's December Runs Through One Square, and Its Christmas Carol Plays in the 1874 Town Hall

Last year, Brecksville's Christmas parade ended on Public Square with Santa, choirs, and fireworks timed to the tree lighting. A few steps from the gazebo, the town's December stage production plays in Old Town Hall, a building on the square that dates to 1874. Two of the restaurants closest to the square have changed hands or been rebuilt since the end of 2024.

For the parade, all you have to do is turn up and find a spot. The theater has a limited number of seats in a historic room, nine performances, and a firm no-refund policy. That makes A Christmas Carol: The Musical the one part of a Brecksville December that rewards booking ahead.

The season opens on November 29

The City of Brecksville lists its Annual Tree Lighting and Christmas Parade for Sunday, November 29, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. That's a little over three weeks after this post goes up. The city's event page hasn't posted the 2026 route or program yet; it says only that details are to come.

Last year gives a good idea of the format. Scriptype's coverage of the 2025 event reported that the November 30 parade traveled along Brecksville Road from City Hall to Public Square, with live animals, city safety vehicles, and civic groups. Santa arrived on a float, and Mayor Daryl Kingston and his wife, Nancy, rode in the parade. Once the parade reached the square, there were photos with Santa, Frosty, the Grinch, and Rudolph, plus sets from the Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School Chamber Choir and the Brecksville Recreation Department Children's Theater Group. 2025 also added covered stalls with a petting zoo of nativity-themed animals. The night ended with the tree and holiday lights coming on in sync with a 20-minute fireworks show.

Float awards went to Revel Dance Complex, Bear Landscaping, Cuyahoga Valley Native Sons & Daughters, and Brecksville Co-op Preschool. The parade leans on local groups. The 2026 location and program aren't posted yet, so check the city calendar for final details as the date gets closer.

If the 2026 event follows last year's format, the square's lights go on that Sunday. Five days later, on Friday, December 4, the theater in the middle of the square opens its run.

One theater company, formed from two

People who have lived here a while may still say "Brecksville Little Theatre" or "Theatre on the Square." Both names now belong to one organization. The Brecksville Theatre says it began on July 1, 2017, as a merger of Brecksville Theater on the Square and Brecksville Little Theatre, with leaders from both groups writing a shared mission "to engage the community through the performing arts." Cleveland.com reported the plan in January 2017, describing Brecksville Little Theatre's farewell season and the merger set for that fall.

The roots go back much further. According to the theater's venue page, fewer than ten Brecksville residents founded the company in 1941. It has performed in Old Town Hall "through the generosity of the Brecksville City governance," and it has staged more than 200 plays and musicals since then. A 2011 cleveland.com profile marking the company's 70th year said it organized in 1940 and 1941.

The newest chapter started last year. In an August 2025 update on its own site, the theater said it had rebuilt its board and executive leadership, refreshed its mission and values, met with the mayor and key stakeholders, and designed a new season. The board is now led by President Diana Strongosky, Vice President Anthony Salatino, Secretary Kristy Whittaker, and Treasurer Jason Kurlychek. The theater's homepage describes the change this way:

"The Brecksville Theatre is embarking on an exhilarating new chapter! With fresh faces, bold ideas, and a renewed spirit, we're proud to announce a new beginning."

A Christmas Carol: The Musical, directed by Jacqi Loewy, is the first December show under that new leadership.

Nine performances, three weekends

The run fits the usual community theater pattern of Friday and Saturday evenings plus Sunday matinees. The ticket page on On The Stage lists these dates:

Weekend Friday, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, 2:00 p.m.
First December 4 December 5 December 6
Second December 11 December 12 December 13
Third December 18 December 19 December 20

The listed running time is 135 minutes, so evening shows end around 9:45 p.m. and Sunday matinees end around 4:15 p.m. Every seat is reserved at $20.00.

The room is small. In 2011, cleveland.com reported that Old Town Hall seated about 130 guests. If that number still holds, the whole run has somewhere around 1,200 seats. A popular December title can fill that quickly, and the second weekend, which falls closest to most school and office holiday events, is often the hardest to plan around.

The house rules for a historic hall

The ticket page and the venue page include a few details that are easy to overlook in a building this old.

  • All sales are final. The theater won't issue refunds. If your plans change, it turns the ticket into a donation to support the arts and asks you not to "be a Scrooge" about it.
  • Age guidance. The show is recommended for ages 6 and up because it "contains some ghostly moments that may startle very young children."
  • Late seating. Late arrivals wait for a suitable pause in the performance before they're seated.
  • Elevator from below. The elevator is on the lower level, under the stone arch. That level also has the restrooms and a small gathering room. The elevator goes up to the second level, where you'll find the box office and the main theater entrance.
  • Seating access. Wheelchair seating is in the front row, and any end seat can be removed to make room for a wheelchair. The balcony has no elevator access.
  • Parking and drop-off. Accessible parking is on the square and in the lot next to Old Town Hall, and drivers can drop passengers off in front of the theater.

Since there are no refunds, it helps to settle on a date with your group before you buy. Because the late-seating rule holds people at the door, a dinner that runs long can cost you the opening scenes.

Dinner within sight of the stage

A 7:30 curtain leaves time for an early dinner nearby, and the options closest to the square have changed recently.

Brick & Vine Restaurant, at 8903 Brecksville Road on the southeast corner of Brecksville Road and Ohio 82, is in the historic Red Brick Store. Cleveland.com reported that it celebrated its grand opening on July 25, 2025, after the previous tenant, Carpe Raci, closed on July 19. This December is its first holiday season with the theater next door running a full schedule.

The Courtyard Café at 7600 Chippewa Road has been in town since 1983. In April 2025, cleveland.com reported that a December kitchen fire had caused about $1 million in damage and closed the café for months. A June 2025 cleveland.com follow-up said it reopened on May 22, 2025, with new flooring, updated lighting, and a refreshed menu, and with all but one of its staff back.

A few more spots along the two main roads list current hours on their own sites:

For a Sunday matinee, the order flips. The show ends around 4:15, so dinner comes afterward.

The theater is also returning to the same weeks next year with Little Women: The Musical, scheduled for December 3 through 19, 2027. If you get attached to the Old Town Hall routine this year, you can plan on it again.
